Kearney High School's sophomore Caroline Kelly and junior Serra Hanrahan, the former with the game-winning goal, and the latter the leader of a stifling defensive effort, led the Lady Bulldogs to a thrilling 1-0 victory over Notre Dame De Sion on Saturday afternoon, in the Missouri Class 3 state quarterfinals on Saturday
afternoon. Playing in conditions with temperatures in the low 90s and heat index readings approaching triple digits, the Bulldogs shut down the offense of the unbeaten, top-ranked De Sion side, handing the Lady Storm (20-1) their first loss of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Mayson Behney picked up the shutout, improving Kearney to 22-1, and moving the Bulldogs into a state semifinal showdown on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock against Rockwood Summit, a 6-0 quarterfinal winner over
Hillsboro on Saturday afternoon in Fenton, Missouri. The semifinals, championship game, and third place game will all be played at Swope Park in Kansas City, a 30 minute trek south next weekend for the Kearney faithful.
