The Kansas Jayhawks (8-1) going into Saturday’s matchup had never lost a game (7-0) against the
Kansas City Roos (5-6). After 40 mins of basketball that trend would stay the same. The Roos were defeated 98-57 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.
For Kansas, It will be known as the David McCormack game. The sophomore led all scorers with 28 points in just 16:36 minutes of action.
The narrative going into the game for the Jayhawks was; who besides Udoka Azubuike would contribute inside? McCormack answered the call by going 11-14 from the field and was 100% (6-6) from the charity stripe. He also added seven rebounds to go along with two steals.
As well as McCormick played, Azubuike still managed to have an efficient day on offense dropping 9 points to go along with 4 assists. However, it was his defense that played a bigger role as Azubuike had 3 blocks, and all 5 of his rebounds came on the defensive end.
As for the guard play of Kansas, Devon Dotson had his casual 18 points, 3 assits, and 3 steals. Marcus Garrett had himself a nice game contributing with 13 points, while going 4-5 from the field and was 100% from beyond the arc (3-3).
The defense of the Jayhawks is what allowed them to get most of their points as they scored 30 points off of 22 Kansas City turnovers. For Kansas City, they only had two players in double digits. Javan White and Marvin Nesbitt Jr. both finished with 12-points.
The Roos trailed early, thanks to a 6-0 Kansas run to start the game. Kansas City was able to come back though, and took a three point lead on Kansas (10-13) with 11:52 left in the first half.
After that, Bill Self called a timeout and the Jayhawks went on 17-3 run to regain the lead 27-16--with under 6 minutes to play in the half.
The Jayhawks never looked back, as they led by as many as 21 in the first half and took a 43-24 led into the locker room. Kansas came out on fire in the second half as they rattled off seven straight buckets.
Kansas City had no answer and the Jayhawks coasted to an easy 41-point win.
Next up for Kansas (9-1) they head to take on No. 20 Villanova (8-2) who is coming off just an eight point
home victory over Delaware (9-2), 78-70.
The Kansas City Roos (5-7) will stay home and host Toledo (8-2) after they beat Detroit (1-9) by eight
points as well, 80-72.
