Big Class: 1. Chillicothe (9-1)The Hornets opened the Class 3, District 8 tournament with an easy 49-8 victory over winless Cameron Friday at home.It’s hard not to imagine a rematch with Maryville in the district championship game Nov. 3 as Chillicothe hosts fourth-seeded Pembroke Hill in the semifinals.
2. Smithville (9-1)
The Warriors are likely done with the MEC in football after defeating Savannah 42-17 in the first round of the Class 4, District 8 tournament at home as the No. 3 seed.
Smithville now goes on a short road trip west to play No. 2 seed Platte County in the district semifinals.
The Pirates defeated Benton 50-21 in the first round.
Platte County is the place to be this week if you have no allegiances.
3. Maryville (8-2)
Maryville took it first step towards a rematch with Chillicothe Nov. 3 in the Class 3, District 8 championship game with a 69-26 win over Lincoln College Prep in the first round.
The second-seeded Spoofhounds host future MEC conference mate St. Pius X — whom they defefated 40-20 in week 2 — in the semifinals Friday.
4. Lafayette (8-2)
Lafayette and Excelsior Springs didn’t disappoint in the first round of the Class 4, District 8 tournament, with the Fighting Irish pulling out a thrilling 35-34 win in a matchup of 7-2 teams.
Now, fourth-seeded Lafayette heads to No. 1 seed Kearney where it can pull out all the stops as it has nothing to lose.
5. St. Joseph Central (4-6)
The Indians opened the Class 5, District 8 tournament with a 48-32 win over Oak Park.
They face top-seeded Staley in the semifinals.
Small Class:
1. Hamilton (9-1)
The second-seeded Hornets blanked Milan 35-0 in the first round of the Class 1, District 8 tournament and now host sixth-seeded Putnam County, who pulled off a 32-22 upset over third-seeded Gallatin.
Hamilton seems destined for a showdown with undefeated Princeton in the district championship game.
2. East Buchanan (8-2)
The top-seeded ‘Dawgs weren’t all that impressive in their Class 1, District 7 opening win over No. 8 seed Mid-Buchanan, but winning is all that matters.
In another KCI rematch, East Buchanan hosts fourth-seeded West Platte in the semifinals.
The ‘Dawgs won the first matchup 36-6 in week 3.
3. Lathrop (8-2)
The third-seeded Mules took care of Trenton 41-15 in the first round of the Class 2, District 8 tournament and now play in what looks to be the best game in the Uclick TV small-class area this week when they head to No. 2 seed Lexington for the semifinals.
The Minutemen beat Carrollton in the first round 49-21 and have only lost to undefeated Higginsville this season.
4. Marceline (10-0)
Coach Greg Hough and the Tigers kept on rolling in the first round of the Class 1, District 6 tournament with a 40-0 win over Salisbury.
Marceline hosts Santa Fe in the semifinals, and barring an upset, will have a rematch with either
Fayette or Westran in the district title game.
5. Lawson (6-4)
In Class 2, District 8, the fifth-seeded Cardinals won the most intriguing small-class first-round matchup in the Uclick TV area when they topped fourth-seeded Bishop-LeBlond in impressive fashion, 36-6.
It marked Lawson’s third straight win.
Now comes a rematch with Higginsville.
The Huskers won the first matchup 34-10 back in week 2 and are a perfect 10-0 on the year.
