In the Class 4, District 8 final at Platte County, the Fighting Irish (9-2) enter as the underdog being the district’s fourth seed.

Lafayette knocked off fifth-seeded Excelsior Springs in the first round, then stunned top-seeded Kearney in the semifinals last week as Diego Bernard went wild, throwing for more than 230 yards and rushing for over 100.

He threw three TDs, rushed for two more and had the winning score on an interception return.

Platte County (9-2) will play its third straight MEC opponent after beating Benton (50-21) and Smithville (42-13) in the first two rounds.

The Pirates lost to Kearney, 38-31, in overtime in week 9. Their other loss came to Class 5 Staley, 62-27, in week 5.

In Chillicothe, the Hornets have a rematch with Maryville.

Chillicothe (10-1) won the first meeting, 24-0 in week 3, but the Spoofhounds now have running back Eli Dowis back in the fold.

Dowis and Tyler Houchin, who ran for 157 yards and two scores in last week’s 42-7 semifinal win over St. Pius X, give the Spoofhounds a solid one-two punch on the ground.

The Hornets have their own dynamic rushing attack.

Running back Josh Kille set the school record for single-season touchdowns, career rushing touchdowns, career touchdowns and points in a single season last week against Pembroke Hill after scoring six times on the ground.

Chillicothe pasted the Raiders, 60-7, as Kille finished with 259 yards on just 15 carries.

Brett Shaffer offers another dangerous option for the Hornets on the ground, while quarterback Jack Willard is a dual threat who can put up passing numbers when needed.

Both games should be highly entertaining
