Mustangs Outlast Renegades in Slugfest

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The St. Joseph Mustangs (17-15, 14-14) are known for their prowess in the MINK. After going 1-5 against them in their inaugural season, the Renegades (17-14, 13-14) have completely changed their perception in St. Joe – having already bested them twice in three tries. The two teams have been incredibly competitive, and tonight was every bit as advertised as the Mustangs finally edged out an 11-10 win.

The Renegades opened the scoring early, as Logan Hudson led off the game with a home run to the opposite field. Complimenting the offensive effort was Matthew Wade, who got off to a good start facing just one over the minimum through his first two innings pitched. The Mustangs were able to break through in the third however, getting on the board with a two-run homer from Chaz Verduzco.

The fourth inning was even more fruitful for the Mustangs, as they recorded a run on a Terrence Spurlin double before leaving the yard again, courtesy of Aaron Dees.

After four innings, the Mustangs narrowly led 5-4 – but then trailed an inning later after the Renegades put up three runs of their own. The game took a turn after an inning in which the Renegades committed three balks, allowing two runs and surrendering the lead.

The teams continued to exchange runs, until St. Joe put the exclamation point on its win, scoring two much-needed insurance runs in the top of the ninth.

The Renegades – true to their never-quit DNA, scored a run and threatened for more in the bottom of the ninth, but Nicholas Houzenga finally shut the door for the Mustangs in the 9th.
