Defense Deflates Renegades in Season Opener

After a lazy fly out to left field to kick off the 2018 MINK League season, Sedalia’s Ashanti Wheatley wasted no time taking matters into his own hands. After reaching base on an error, Wheatley placed himself in scoring position stealing second just a few pitches later, and scoring on a Ryan Flores single just moments after that.

Flores would knock in Wheatley again just two innings later with a two-run blast to right field, setting the tone for the Bombers as they took care of business in Jefferson City, beating the Renegades 9-6. In total, Wheatley would score four of those nine runs, reaching base twice on Renegades errors.

That would somewhat sour the evening for the Renegades early on, as they committed three errors behind right hander Alex Loosbrock, who only lasted five innings. To make matters worse, the University of Houston’s Spencer Juergens looked untouchable, taking a perfect game into the fourth inning. The Renegades did break through in the sixth however, cutting the lead to 6-3 on RBI’s by Justin McIntyre and Quincy Jones.

Unfortunately for the Renegades faithful, those runs were earned right back by Sedalia, who carried a 9-3 lead into the ninth. After taking advantage of some defensive miscues, Jefferson City rallied to within three and in fact trotted the winning run to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. In a save situation, Austin Hansel shut the door on the Renegades rally with a breaking ball for strike three.

On Thursday night the Renegades will travel to Sedalia to take on the Bombers once more before returning home for a three-game weekend tilt with the Clarinda A’s.

First pitch for tonight's Jefferson City-Sedalia game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CST with Renegades Pregame Live starting at 6:45 p.m. CST. Watch below:
