JOPLIN, Mo. - So far this week, pitching has been the name of the game for the Renegades, as they were able to edge out two low scoring affairs against Springfield. Tonight in Joplin was a different story. The Jefferson City Renegades (5-3) came alive at the plate, soundly defeating the Joplin Outlaws (0-6) by a score of 10-1.
The pitching staff didn’t let up either, as the Renegades have held their opponent to just a single run in each of the last two contests, and five runs total over the past three games. After a solid outing from starter Michael McElmeel, it was Christian Watson who shut the door tonight, pitching three scoreless frames to earn the win.
As opposed to last night’s 2-1 win over the Springfield Redbirds, the Jefferson City hurlers received run support in bunches. The Renegades sent an astounding 51 hitters to the plate, amassing a .325 batting average on the night. The game wasn’t as out of hand as the numbers
would indicate though, as the Renegades scored half of their runs in the ninth to secure the victory. Tyler Bracht collected two more hits at the dish, giving him a MINK League best twelve total – that is, until teammate Quincy Jones smacked another two RBI double into the gap to tie that number. Jones drove in three runs on the night in total.
Before the game Renegades relief pitcher Chris Sheputis agreed to eat a banana in one bite every time this year the Renegades score more than four runs in an inning. For your entertainment, here is banana no. 1:
The Renegades have now won five of their last six contests. Subtracting a Sunday loss to the Clarinda A’s, they haven’t lost since the second game of the season. It’s safe to say they’ll probably sit in the same seats on the bus tomorrow as they try to keep their mojo rolling all the way to Sedalia to face the Bombers, a team that has handed them two of their three losses on the year.
