Mudcats Prevail in Pitcher Duel

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Chillicothe Mudcats had a long bus ride to Ernie Vivion Field today to take on the Renegades. It didn’t bother starter Trae Brownell one bit. The righty pitched perfectly through the order his first time through, and even took a no hitter into the seventh before Logan Hudson finally broke it up.

Ultimately, that was enough to put the Mudcats (4-9) over the top as they prevailed 5-2 over the Renegades (7-5) in a wind sprint of a ball game. Renegades starter Kaden Helsel had the juice to match Brownell

pitch-for-pitch in the early going, striking out five in the first three innings and allowing just one base runner in that time frame.

The Mudcats eventually broke through in the fifth after a single and a stolen base from Derek Hussey. After a pair of walks loaded the bases with nobody out, a fielder’s choice and an RBI single by Peyton Cormane finally put the Mudcats on the board 2-0. Cormane drove home another in the seventh as Chillicothe expanded its lead before the Renegades finally erased their zero, scoring on a Ridge Rogers RBI single.

Unfortunately for the Renegades, a half-inning later the Mudcats responded. An errant throw on a Luke Schwartz sacrifice bunt allowed two more runs to cross the plate. In the end, it was too tall a task for the Renegades. They scored one as Quincy Jones came around on a passed ball, but fell 5-2 as Hayden House earned the multi-inning save.
