JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - After a series of recent pitching duels, the explosion of runs from both sides Sunday was hardly predictable. The two sides exchanged blows early and often, playing to an 8-8 tie before the Mudcats emphatically pulled away with a six-run top of the tenth to win it.
The extra-inning affair was the first one the Renegades (12-8) have had to participate in all season, which is surprising considering how close the club is to the All-Star break. Fans didn’t have to wait long to see scoring, as Chillicothe (9-12) grabbed a pair in the top of the second, followed by an RBI triple by Logan Hudson in the bottom half. The Mudcats then did the majority of the scoring throughout the middle part of the game, scoring thrice in the fifth and then once in the sixth.
The Renegades were able to keep it close throughout however, scoring two in the bottom of the fifth, but when the Mudcats were able to extend their lead to 8-3, the outlook for Jefferson City looked bleak. But for the second day in a row, the resurgent Renegades were up to the task. This time, the Renegades were able to rally for five in the bottom of the ninth, sending ten hitters to the plate in totality. The Mudcats wasted no time in silencing the rowdy crowd at Ernie Vivion Field in the top of the tenth. Chillicothe answered the five-run ninth from Jeff City with a six-spot of their own, finally putting the Renegades away for good.
Jefferson City drops to 1-3 against the Mudcats this year and will enjoy an off-day tomorrow before completing the first half with a road game against Joplin on Tuesday night, the host site for the All-Star game that will take place a day after on Wednesday.
