JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Jefferson City Renegades entered Saturday’s contest versus Sedalia just 1-4 for the season, and after the Bombers broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in the seventh, it looked as though Sedalia would walk away with five wins in six tries against the Renegades. That is, until the resurgent Renegades responded – walking off the Bombers with a two-run single in the ninth.
Jefferson City (11-8) had allowed Sedalia (15-6) to get the better of the run differential by a wide margin through the first five games between the two this season, and that was due in large part to the control issues from the pitching staff. That wasn’t the case tonight however, as starter Matthew Wade threw a sterling six innings of one run ball, allowing just four hits in the process. From there, the bullpen initially wavered when Alec Kubic walked and hit a batter to begin the seventh. Both of those runners came around the horn to score, but the bullpen controlled the damage from that point forward, giving the offense a chance.
For most of the evening, the Renegades hit the ball hard, but right at the Bombers fielders. In fact, the offense was able to manufacture just one run all night against righty Tyler Clark – who went seven innings deep and didn’t walk a single hitter. The momentum changed when the Bombers had to dig into their pen to start the eighth. Conner Davis was unable to get through the inning, and then Austin Cheely was unable to save the run as the Renegades pulled the game to 3-2 on a wild pitch.
In the top of the ninth, it was again the Renegades pen that gave the offense a chance. Christian Watson fired a scoreless ninth frame, setting the Bombers hitrers down in order. Trailing by a run with runners on second and third and down to their last out, Jake Slunder worked a walk to load the bases.
Then it was Quincy Jones’ turn to play hero – and he was up to the challenge.
Jumping on closer Adam Link early in the count, Jones sent the offering back into centerfield, scoring two and giving the Renegades the walk off win.
The Renegades will try to keep the momentum rolling into a Sunday day-game against the Chillicothe Mudcats.
